UnlockdBox: Be there for your clients, even when you can’t

Why I Created UnlockdBox

I was like 2 million other people who wanted to get into real estate to change their careers. I wanted to provide a better work life balance for me and my family while building a respectable career. Once the excitement of being newly licensed started to wear off, I found myself, like most of my colleagues, grinding and working hard to meet new clients. As an agent, I knew the struggles of managing the highs and lows of the real estate industry well. You can have many clients, closing on several houses all at once and then you can go weeks without any active clients or listings. I spent a good portion of my day as a realtor trying to bridge the gap between those peaks and valleys. We’re all out there managing our careers independently and, even when you work as part of a team as I did, there are times where an extra set of hands would ease the stress from your schedule while still providing top-notch service to your clients. 

There’s one instance in particular that sticks out in my mind: I worked in the LA market, which if you’re unfamiliar, is a pretty spread out area, especially when you have to account for traffic at all hours of the day. I had a referral client who wanted to look at houses easily an hour away from my home base in the Valley. I wasn’t able to get out there to show houses as often as I wanted to and I felt like I was letting my client down. I thought, “there has to be a better way.” 

IMG-9210I found the most success when I worked with other agents, when I sat open houses for them, when I networked with them and when I learned from them. I’ll let you in on a little secret: It was my failure to find my referral client a house that led me to create this business. The truth is, it wasn’t my failure, there weren’t any everyday tools available to help realtors in the ways that we really need. 

Not only that, my experience showed me that I wasn’t alone. Many agents can’t weather the swings from busy to slower seasons and have to supplement their careers with other jobs. There’s also significant gender and racial disparity in the industry that I felt wasn’t being meaningfully addressed. Consider for example that women agents earn significantly less than their male counterparts, even though 7 in 10 agents are women. Additionally, according to US Census information, 76% of Real estate brokers & sales agents are White, while just over 6% are Black, and nearly 8% are Hispanic. All of this hit me in a way that I knew I had to do something about it.

After experiencing this all first-hand, I thought there had to be a better way – a way to address all of these issues in the industry and make it a more consistent way to earn money for everyone. I knew there was a way to achieve this through technology. Technology was the key to democratizing real estate and to advance our field. UnlockdBox was born out of a need to help manage both busy and slower schedules, and in doing so, helps to level the playing field in the real estate industry for greater long-term and sustainable success. 

 

Introducing UnlockdBox 

IMG-9743UnlockdBox is a free mobile app that allows licensed real estate agents to instantly request and pay for assistance from other professionals for any number of business-critical tasks, ranging from unlocking a door for a showing, to sitting at an open house, from posting a sign, to meeting a photographer, appraiser or inspector, or watching over a home staging. Think of it as an on-demand second set of hands or, when needed, the smart ‘side hustle’ for real estate agents. 

UnlockdBox was designed to give agents a competitive advantage to more easily meet their clients’ needs on-demand, harnessing the assistance of other friendly licensed agents at their fingertips to get more transactions completed professionally, ethically and easily. By providing new income and networking opportunities, UnlockdBox helps to stabilize an agent’s earning potential while helping them find new clients. 

In an industry that is highly-competitive and notoriously difficult to become established, UnlockdBox is designed to democratize and empower more diversity in the real estate industry, making a lasting career in real estate more attainable for people of all backgrounds.

 

How it works 

IMG-9435Upon downloading the app and signing up, agents can create profiles to introduce themselves, where they work and details about types of jobs they seek or are hiring for. This is a fun area to really highlight the agent to grow their social network within the app. The more details an agent can provide here the more desirable they are for jobs. Before accepting a job, users are required to accept terms and conditions that uphold professionalism and ethical standards when performing the task. Once a profile is created, agents can either request or accept jobs- just like in real life, we can either need an extra set of hands or be that extra set of hands. 

Built with independent agents as well as brokerages in mind, the app offers flexibility and personalization, allowing the requesting agent to narrow their request to reach their own hand-picked network or team, or filter down to just agents within their brokerage. Users can also create a mileage radius in which they’ll accept jobs. Each request and accepted job is easily tracked within the app, which also easily tracks earnings made through the app.

Depending on the urgency, the time commitment, or other factors, the requesting agent can set their own fees for their job, with a minimum job payment of $30, and jobs are paid through linked PayPal. While there are no costs to use the app, UnlockdBox charges a small percentage-based transaction fee to requesting agents for paid gigs. There are no fees for in-app networking opportunities or sitting open houses.
