virginia licensing logoAcross all of America, the housing market is booming. Virginia has been especially affected, with a 24.4% increase in home sales and a 17.1% increase in median home value between June 2020 and June 2021.

Northern Virginia in particular is experiencing incredible activity, primarily due to the many condominiums and townhomes that have recently come onto the market. But despite the boom in supply, the demand is still higher, and as a result prices continue to rise.

The recent success of real estate has convinced many people seeking a successful career path to go out and get their real estate license in Virginia. 6. Reviews directly from agents who’ve attended the school

There are dozens of options (some of them not so great!), so we’ve taken the work off your plate by narrowing down the list to only the ones that scored high enough. Whether you’re dedicating yourself full time to your new career, are looking to fly through the courses quickly to get them over with, or are busy and looking to work through them when you have downtime, here is a list of the best online real estate schools in Virginia you should consider.

Refund Policy:

Students in Virginia can claim a refund on pre-licensing and post-licensing courses within 30 days of purchase as long as they have completed less than 50% of the course. If the exam prep course is purchased alone, the refund must be requested before completing the initial assessment or within 30 days of purchase.

The school also touts a pass or don’t pay policy for their exam prep course. However, there are several barriers to claim this: the student must have mastered every topic exam by scoring 80% or higher 3 times and completed at least 3 comprehensive practice exams for both the national and state portions. A copy of the paid exam receipt must be provided as well as a copy of the exam results with the date of completion clearly labelled. If the exam course was purchases standalone, then your full purchase will be refunded. If it was purchased as part of a package, only the exam prep cost will be refunded, which is somewhere between $69-79 at time of writing. It should also be noted that, you are only eligible for a refund after your first exam attempt.

Upon completion both courses offer access to post-licensing education and continuing education courses at no additional cost, as well as free local career seminars to help you get your career off the ground.

Pass Rates:

While Moseley’s exact pass rate is not publicly available, the school advertises their pass rates as higher than the state average, placing them somewhere above 52%.

Reviews for Mosely’s Real Estate School are overwhelmingly positive. Students praised the asynchronous course, stating that the ability to work at your own pace was invaluable. The in-person classes were equally well received, with students agreeing that their instructors were professional and very helpful. Students agree that both courses are comprehensive and prepare you well for the exam.

Some criticisms came from the school’s lack of interactive activities, which led to the material feeling dry and hard to focus on, especially for online learners. There were also a number of complaints surrounding the in-person courses, as several students claim that the school rescheduled their entire course for a later date, then denied them a refund when they couldn’t attend on the rescheduled dates.

The best parts of Mosely’s program include:

  • Free ongoing education: Mosely offers both post-licensing and continuing education for free, meaning after one payment upfront, you won’t have to pay for education for the rest of your career.
  • High quality education: Students reported that the course prepared them for the exam. In-person students found the instructors to be helpful, and asynchronous students found the provided texts to be sufficiently comprehensive with few mistakes or typos.
  • Course options: With an option between focused in-person classes and a more flexible online program, the school will more than likely accommodate your educational needs.
  • Discounts: The school frequently offers 20% discounts on their courses, which helps to offset the high price. They also have a year-round 30% discount for veterans and first responders, as well as their spouses.

Some of the major downsides include:

  • High price: At the time of writing, the asynchronous courses costs $350, which is a bit higher than most other e-learning real estate courses. The in-class option is even more expensive, coming in at $550.
  • Outdated study methods: the text-based material and lack of interaction makes the course difficult to complete for those with focus issues, especially throughout the asynchronous course.

Refund Policy:

The school has separate refund policies for in-person and asynchronous classes. For asynchronous classes, the refund must be requested either within 10 days of sending payment for the course or before completing 25% of the course.

In-person classes require cancellation within 10 days of payment or before the first day of class. As previously mentioned, customers have reported experiences where the course was rescheduled after the 10-day period expired. In these rare cases, the school has been known to offer a switch to their asynchronous course, upon which they will refund the price difference between the courses. Additionally, payment is not due until 4 days before the course begins; as such, it may be advisable to hold off on paying earlier than you have to.

If you need to reschedule the course for your own personal reasons, the school requires a small administrative fee.

Additionally, the school offers dozens of post-licensing courses, which can be purchased in a convenient 30-hour bundle, as well as continuing education courses which can be purchased in 16-hour packages.

Pass rates:

Reviews for Kaplan are overall positive. Positive reviewers praised the school’s programs and said they felt adequately prepared for the exam after completing the test. They also praised the course for allowing them to work around their own schedule. The instructors were mentioned several times as being knowledgeable and helpful, and many said they would recommend the school to a friend.

On the flip side, there were a large number of complaints regarding the technical side of the school. Many students reported glitches within the course, and several students claim that entire courses were rendered incompletable because they wouldn’t load or submit assessments properly. This is exacerbated by the school’s technical support line, which allegedly has long wait times and students often reported that it would take several days to for their issues to be corrected. Even when the courses work properly, students complained that the outdated design of the course made it hard to properly navigate.

Kaplan Unit Overview Screenshot

The best aspects of Kaplan’s program include:

  • High quality education: With high pass rates, numerous state-approved courses, and helpful instructors, Kaplan is sure to provide you all of the tools you need to pass your exam and launch your career.
  • Lots of Options: With several packages available for every step of your education as well as the option to purchase individual courses, Kaplan’s education is highly customizable, allowing you to focus in on the information that you need instead of endlessly reviewing facts you already know

The biggest cons include:

  • Poor website: With an outdated layout, frequent glitches, and a tech support line that leaves a lot to be desired, Kaplan’s platform is less reliable than other online RE schools and causes frustration amongst students.
  • High cost: The school’s Career Launcher package, at the time of writing, costs $548, nearly $200 more than the most expensive pre-licensing package at any other real estate school
  • Online Only: The school only offers in-person sessions in 7 states, and Virginia is not one of them, meaning students who experience issues with focus or motivation will likely struggle with the online format.
  • 6 month deadline: While most of the courses on this list are available for 12 months after purchase, Kaplan’s is only available for 6, putting students on a tighter timeline.

Kaplan Quick Quiz Screenshot 2

Refund Policy:

Unlike most real estate schools, Kaplan’s refund policies are very forgiving and straightforward. For all packages, students have 30 days after purchase to receive a refund unless the course is fully completed within those 30 days.

For those who purchase the Career Launcher Package, in the event that you need to reschedule your coaching you may do so totally free of charge up to 3 times. After that, a small fee will be collected for each rescheduled session.
