One is an all-in-one operating system for agents. The other is the CRM that top-producing agents swear by. Here’s my take on how to know which one is actually right for your business.

My Quick Verdict: BoldTrail wins if you need an all-in-one platform including websites, CRM, lead gen, and back-office in one place. Follow Up Boss wins if you already have a website and lead sources and want the best pure CRM for managing follow-up and team accountability. They are not head-to-head competitors so much as tools for fundamentally different business models.

Overview: What Each Platform Actually Does

BoldTrail-PrimaryLogo-FullColor-LayeredIf you’ve been comparing BoldTrail and Follow Up Boss, you’ve probably noticed they both call themselves real estate CRMs. That’s technically accurate, but it understates how different they are in practice.

BoldTrail: Formerly known as kvCORE, and rebranded by Inside Real Estate in June 2024. BoldTrail is a comprehensive real estate operating system. It bundles CRM, IDX websites, marketing automation, lead generation, back-office tools, and recruiting features into a single platform. The pitch is consolidation: stop paying for five separate tools and manage everything in one place.

  • All-in-one platform for agents, teams, and brokerages. Includes CRM, IDX websites, Smart Campaigns, lead generation, back-office management, and recruiting tools. Formerly kvCORE. Built for consolidation and scale.

Follow Up Boss (FUB) does one thing and does it exceptionally well: CRM and follow-up automation. It is deliberately a standalone CRM with no built-in website. Instead, it integrates with over 250 lead sources, website platforms, and third-party tools. The pitch is focus: have the best possible system for the part of your business that most directly drives revenue, which is following up with leads.

  • Purpose-built real estate CRM. No website included. Integrates with 250+ lead sources and tools. Known for clean UX, deep follow-up automation, and 7-day-a-week support. Best-in-class for pure CRM workflows.

Pricing Comparison

Pricing is one of the clearest differences between these platforms, both in structure and transparency.

One important note on BoldTrail: the $499/month solo agent price may not tell the full story. Add-ons, advertising services, and managed lead programs are sold separately.

Follow Up Boss is transparent with pricing, but the jump from $69/month (Grow) to $499/month (Pro) the moment you add a second user is steep and catches many small teams off guard. Factor in the dialer add-on and you’re looking at roughly $108/month as a solo agent if you want calling features.

  • BoldTrail Pricing:
    • Solo agent (starting) is $499/mo
    • Team / brokerage plans require a quote
    • eXp Realty agents (included in tech fee) is ~$85/mo total
  • Follow Up Boss Pricing:
    • Grow — solo agent (1 user) is $69/mo
    • Pro — up to 10 users is $499/mo
    • Platform — up to 30 users is $1,000/mo
    • FUB Calling add-on (Grow plan) is +$39/user/mo

BoldTrail: What It Does Well

BoldTrail’s core value proposition is consolidation. Rather than stitching together a separate CRM, website platform, email marketing tool, and lead management system, BoldTrail brings all of these under one roof. For brokerages or growing teams managing multiple agents, that unified view is genuinely valuable, allowing leaders to get visibility into performance while agents get a full suite of tools without juggling multiple logins.

The platform’s Smart Campaigns handle automated email and text follow-up based on lead behavior. Website activity tracking, such as seeing what properties a lead is browsing, feeds directly into the CRM and can trigger personalized outreach. AI-powered lead prioritization helps agents focus on the most likely-to-convert contacts. BoldTrail also includes back-office tools for commission management and a recruiting module for brokerage growth, features that no standalone CRM like FUB offers.

The trade-off is complexity. Multiple user reviews note a significant learning curve, and the platform works best when everything is configured intentionally. Agents who treat it like a simple contact database won’t get the ROI the platform promises.

BoldTrail Pros

  1. True all-in-one system. CRM, IDX website, lead gen, marketing, back-office, and recruiting in a single platform — no integration overhead.
  2. Built-in lead generation. Landing pages, Smart Numbers, behavioral automation, and IDX search capture leads without third-party tools.
  3. Scales to enterprise. Designed for brokerages managing dozens or hundreds of agents, with team oversight, performance dashboards, and round-robin lead routing.
  4. MLS coverage. Integrates with 600+ MLSs across North America, giving it broad geographic reach for IDX websites.

BoldTrail Cons

  1. Higher starting price. At ~$499/month for solo agents, BoldTrail is one of the more expensive entry points in real estate CRM, which can be prohibitive for newer agents.
  2. Steeper learning curve. The platform’s depth can also be its weakness. New users frequently report needing significant training before getting value from core features.
  3. Non-transparent pricing. You cannot see what you’ll pay without a sales call, making comparison shopping difficult.
  4. Overkill for solo agents. Brokerages and large teams get the most value. Individual agents often pay for features they never use.

Follow Up Boss: What It Does Well

Follow Up Boss has earned its reputation among high-producing agents. More than 100,000 agents use it daily. That adoption isn’t accidental, FUB is exceptionally good at the one thing it promises: making sure no lead falls through the cracks.

The UX is clean and intentional in a way that all-in-one platforms rarely achieve. Smart Lists let agents segment contacts instantly based on criteria they set, and Action Plans automate email, text, and task sequences triggered by lead behavior. The integration library, including 250+ lead sources, website providers, and tools, means FUB plugs into whatever stack you’ve already built, rather than asking you to rebuild around it. Support is available seven days a week by phone and email, which users consistently praise.

The obvious limitation is what FUB deliberately doesn’t include. There is no built-in website, no IDX, and no lead generation engine. Agents need to source their own leads and maintain their own website, which means additional cost and complexity outside the CRM. The per-seat pricing model also scales awkwardly for large teams.

Follow Up Boss Pros

  1. Best-in-class CRM experience. Clean interface, intuitive contact management, and follow-up workflows that agents actually use consistently.
  2. Open integration ecosystem. 250+ integrations make it compatible with virtually any lead source, website, or tool you already use.
  3. Transparent pricing and free trial. Public pricing, no setup fees, no contracts on monthly plans, and a 14-day trial with no credit card required.
  4. 7-day-a-week support. FUB’s support team is frequently cited as a standout, with real humans, fast responses, and they’ll help you migrate from other CRMs.

Follow Up Boss Cons

  1. No website or IDX. You’ll need to budget separately for a website and lead generation tools, which can make the true cost of ownership much higher than $69/month.
  2. Pricing cliff at 2+ users. The leap from $69/month (solo) to $499/month (2–10 users) is one of the steepest pricing jumps in the category.
  3. No back-office features. Commission management, recruiting, and brokerage operations are entirely outside FUB’s scope.
  4. Dialer is an add-on. Built-in calling on the Grow plan costs an extra $39/user/month, which can be a meaningful additional line item for calling-heavy teams.
  5. Owned by Zillow. Zillow bought FUB and because of that, I’m adding this as a con because it’s unclear that they have agents’ best interests at heart based on past history.

Who Should Choose BoldTrail vs. Follow Up Boss?

Choose BoldTrail if you are…

  • A brokerage or large team that wants to consolidate technology costs and manage agents in one system
  • An agent or team without an existing website who wants lead generation, IDX, CRM, and marketing in one place
  • A broker who needs back-office tools like commission management, onboarding automation, and recruiting
  • An eXp Realty agent who gets BoldTrail included in the monthly tech fee
  • A tech-comfortable operator willing to invest time in platform setup to get the full benefit
Choose Follow Up Boss if you are…

  • A solo agent or small team who already has a website and lead sources and needs a better CRM
  • A team that values flexibility and open integrations; you want to use the best tool for each job, not a bundled suite
  • An agent prioritizing ease of use and fast onboarding over feature depth, ensuring your team will actually use it
  • A brokerage evaluating tools where support responsiveness and a proven track record matter
  • An agent who wants to try before buying without talking to a salesperson

So Which Is It: BoldTrail or Follow Up Boss?

My honest answer is that these are tools for different businesses, and choosing the wrong one is more common than it should be.

If you’re a solo agent or a small team who already has a website and lead generation working, Follow Up Boss will almost certainly give you better ROI for less friction. The 14-day trial means you can test it against your real workflow before committing to anything.

If you’re a growing brokerage, a team transitioning from multiple disconnected tools, or an agent who wants everything under one roof and is willing to invest in setup, BoldTrail is a genuinely powerful platform. The learning curve is real, and the price is real, but so is the capability, so when it’s configured well, BoldTrail can replace five or six separate tools and give team leaders visibility they can’t get any other way.

The mistake to avoid: buying BoldTrail as a solo agent because the feature list looks impressive, or buying Follow Up Boss as a brokerage leader because the price is lower. My overall advice is to match the tool to the actual stage and structure of your business, and either choice can be the right one.
