On the downside, many students complained that they had to retake the exam and some still didn’t pass after taking the course a second time. They found the material difficult to understand. They also said that they had problems with the return policy and that the school did not live up to their end of the bargain in that regard.

Here are some areas the school could stand to improve.

  • Livestream Provides Limited Access: While the livestream classes are great for providing a personalized experience, there is no way for students to review them on their own time.
  • Lack of Cross Device Compatibility: Real Estate Express does not work on mobile and tablets.
  • Lack of Activity on the Student Forum: A student forum could be a great resource for students. However, the one the Real Estate Express offers seems to be gathering dust. The school could benefit everyone involved by encouraging students to participate in virtual conversations.

Refund/Cancellation Policy

REE offers students a 100% money back guarantee within the first week of taking the course if it does not meet their expectations. If the student has not started the course, they will be eligible for a 100% refund as long as the request is made within 30 days of payment.

The Best Things About the Maryland Real Estate Academy

MREA provides several advantages to its students. Here are some to consider.

  • Small, In Person Classes: The school offers in person, personalized and small group classes that allow students to bond with the teachers and understand the course work.
  • Provides Both Online and In-Person Options: Students can enroll in in-person groups or take flexible courses online.
  • A Variety of Study Courses: The school has a variety of study courses available.
  • Affordable: MREA offers affordable rates as well as discount codes.
  • Relatively High Pass Rates: Students that enter the school have a good chance of passing the real estate exam.

While the school is mostly seen in a favorable light, there are some downsides to be aware of. These are as follows:

  • Online and In Person Classes Not Connected: Since there are two different companies running the online and in person classes, it may be difficult to figure out who is in charge.
  • Only Works Out of One Area: The MREA is specific to Maryland and only operates out of one location. This makes it limiting to students in different states and different parts of Maryland.
  • Limited for In Person Students: While the small class sizes are nice, they make for limited capacity so the school can only enroll a certain number of students at a time. Many others end up on the waiting list.

Refund Cancellation Policy

The cancellation policy varies depending on whether the classes are online or in person.

In person students may cancel within seven days of enrollment for a full refund. If they cancel after the seven days but before the first class starts, they may get a refund minus their application fee. There are no refunds for the textbooks and materials.

The refund policy for online students is the same as what is offered to CE online students as follows:

  • If students are not satisfied with their course, the school will refund their money as long as the refund request is made within 30 days of the purchase and the course is not more than 50% complete. They will also provide refunds for the Exam Prep Edge if the request is made within 30 days of purchase and the initial assessment has not been completed.

Academy of Real Estateacademy of real estate

Editor’s Score: C

The Academy of Real Estate offers pre-licensure and continuing education covering many aspects of the real estate industry, from appraisals to contracts and more.  The Academy of Real Estate features experienced instructors and a well-designed online learning experience. Their courses cover everything from pre-licensure to continuing education, so students can continue to rely on the Academy of Real Estate to meet their educational needs as they move forward with their real estate careers. Among their offerings from continuing education are courses on ethics, negotiations, mastering the CMA, renovation loans, and more.

The Academy of Real Estate’s Online 60-hour Maryland Principles and Practice of Real Estate Course – $245

This program offers everything you need to qualify for the Maryland Real Estate Salesperson Exam. Each unit is designed to introduce different aspects of real estate, and learners must pass a brief assessment at the end of each unit before they can advance to the next. These mastery checks ensure that you fully understand the necessary concepts. In addition to the class resources, students will have the opportunity to take practice exams and can reach out to their instructor for more individual help as needed.

At the end of each unit, students will need to pass a brief mastery check with a score of at least 80%. Once all units have been satisfactorily mastered, students will have the opportunity to take a practice exam. This practice exam, which covers the same topics as the Maryland Real Estate Commission’s licensing exam, gives students the opportunity to uncover deficiencies in their understanding and get more help if needed before sitting for the state exam.

Advantages of the Academy of Real Estate

The price of this course includes everything you need to study for the exam. There are no additional materials required. The program is designed to be self-paced, which means that you can do your learning whenever and wherever, as long as you complete the entire program within 90 days.

Disadvantages of the Academy of Real Estate

As with many online real estate programs, students have a set amount of time to complete the program. The Academy of Real Estate gives students 90 days to complete this 60-hour real estate salesperson course, including the exam. There are no extensions. For this reason, students should try to give themselves as much leeway as possible to allow them to reschedule if necessary due to illness or other unexpected circumstances.

The Academy of Real Estate website contains information regarding their programs for Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Unfortunately, the website is very text-heavy, and it can be difficult to find the information you need.

Have questions? The Academy of Real Estate recommends that you contact your instructor via email and promises a response within 48 hours. For some students, waiting 48 hours to get an answer to a question can hinder their progress, particularly when they only have 90 days to complete the entire program.

Ratings and Reviews

The Academy of Real Estate has a favorable reputation among those in the real estate industry, and reviews among students are also positive.

“Highly recommend this course to anyone interested in pursuing a career in real estate; it was a fantastic learning experience! Ms. Bobbie, the instructor, has a knack for connecting the dots to ensure that the students understand the correlation between the written subject matter and how it applies to real-life experience in the real estate business. I was well prepared for the licensing exam!”

“Excellent training and preparation for the Maryland License Examination. I enjoyed learning the many different types of options available to homebuyers offering a positive 1st Time Homebuyer experience.”

Refund/Cancellation Policy:

The refund and cancellation policy is difficult to find on the Academy of Real Estate’s website. Due to the stringent requirements for licensure, attendance is very strictly kept. You will only receive credit for learning that you actually complete, so missing all or part of a class session will require you to reschedule. Even stepping away to answer a phone call will cause you to lose credit for seat time.

The Academy of Real Estate does reserve the right to cancel classes when necessary. If such an event does occur, students will be offered an opportunity to reschedule or receive a refund if alternative arrangements cannot be made.

Maryland Real Estate Principles and Practice v4.0 – $250

This recently redesigned, 60-hour online course is divided into 35 units. At the end of each unit, you must pass a brief exam with a score of at least 80% to proceed to the next unit. Students can take these assessments as many times as they need to pass.

Once you have successfully passed every unit, you gain access to the practice exam. The practice exam is designed to prepare you for the final exam, and you will need to pass it with a grade of at least 75% to move on to the final, proctored exam. This exam, which must be taken in person, must be taken within 45 days of finishing the course.

You will have two chances to pass the exam. Once you achieve a 70% or greater score, you will be eligible to schedule your state licensing exam. The program is divided into two main sections – Units 1-21 explore the real estate industry from a big picture viewpoint, which prepares you for the national part of the state licensing exam. Units 22-35 focus on the state-specific laws governing the sale and transfer of real estate in Maryland. The curriculum is prescribed by the Maryland State Real Estate Commission and is designed to give you the best chance to pass the notoriously rigorous licensing exam.

Disadvantages of The Frederick Academy of Real Estate

If you are dissatisfied with the quality of your learning experience at The Frederick Academy of Real Estate, you may need to wait as many as two months to get a refund. The course tuition does not include a textbook. You will not need a book to complete the program since the content covered in the state exam portion is available for free online at the Maryland Real Estate Commission’s website. If you’d still prefer to have a textbook, they are available from the bookstore for an additional cost.

Ratings and Reviews

While there do not seem to be any legitimate reviews for this program online, The Frederick Academy of Real Estate is listed as an approved real estate education provider by the Maryland Real Estate Commission. The one review found online appeared to be more of an ad for a competitor rather than a good-faith assessment of this particular school.

Refund/Cancellation Policy:

If the student wishes to cancel within seven days of enrollment (before the first session), you can receive a full refund of your tuition. Once the course has opened, tuition is pro-rated based on how much of the course the learner has accessed.

The refund policy is as follows:

  • < 10% – 90% refund
  • 10-19% – 80% refund
  • 20-29% – 70% refund
  • 30-39% – 60% refund
  • 40-49% – 50% refund
  • 50% or greater – no refund

Be advised that even when a refund is approved, students may have to wait as long as sixty days to receive their funds.
