This was a waste of my money! I learned more about the teachers ancestors than I did real estate. I had to buy the PSI book and study for one year to feel the confidence just to fail! Took the test again and failed by two points. Today I have to take the course over but went to another company and saved over $215 for the course and I’ve already learned more in three hours then I did the two week course at this school. I highly recommend anyone wanting to take this course to shop around, because the course in Woburn is only $135 and well worth it.

I've been going to Area since 1987 when Ted was running the place. What a great guy!
I want to renew my real estate broker license so I will need to take the 12 hr online course and pay the Real Estate license fee, of course.
Thank you Area!

Alicia Wyman is what defines an effective teacher. Great use of analogies & personal experiences that couple perfectly with the pertinent information to memorize. I've never liked school or most teachers, but She's right on point.

About American Real Estate Academy

One of the top choices for real estate pre-licensing in Massachusetts is the Massachusetts Real Estate School. It’s the largest and the longest-running real estate school in the state. With over 48 years of teaching experience, the school has served over 20,000 students. Its slogan is: “A name you know. A school you can trust.”

Quick Facts

  • The late Theodore J. Vlachos founded the school in 1972. He is described as a dedicated instructor and credited with helping thousands of students become real estate agents.
  • AREA’s mission has been to offer students the best real estate education possible. They are also committed to taking advantage of the latest technologies to facilitate learning.
  • The school offers both in-person classroom and online real estate courses.
  • In-person courses are taught at their center in Waltham, Massachusetts. It is listed on the official Massachusetts government site as one of the authorized locations for real estate education.

American Real Estate Academy Courses

The pre-licensing course consists of 40 clock hours that you must finish before sitting for the real estate exam. Not much is required to take the course. You have to be 18 years old and have attained a high school diploma or equivalent certificate.

Courses are offered as a lecture series with eight major subjects to be covered. Each accounts for 5 hours.

AREA offers a textbook, and online students obtain its PDF version. For the in-person class, students are encouraged to take their own notes that they can use to review the content along with the study materials provided.

Broker pre-licensing

Before obtaining broker education, you must have been actively working as a real estate salesperson for at least three years. Just like the salesperson program, you will need to complete 40 hours of instruction.

The school splits the course into two. You can cover the first part online on your own. The second portion is offered through instructor-led online classes that you can stream throughout the week.

Continuing Education

Real estate agents typically renew their licenses every two years in Massachusetts. You will require at least 12 hours of continuing education. There’s no need to attend the courses in person.

The school has prioritized offering these courses online. And to keep them engaging, they are provided as video classes that you can stream even on your mobile device on the go. Still, some agents would appreciate attending in-person classes. AREA has a variety of CE classes for them at their location.

Learning Experience and Delivery Modes

Starting off, students will enjoy a flexible learning experience. In-person classes scheduled on weekdays are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will take only two weeks to complete the 40 clock hours, and the classes don’t meet on Wednesdays.

Students who choose the weekend option will meet on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays and also take two weeks to finish the course. The school has a convenient location along with private parking available.

There are on-demand videos of all topics, which are useful for reviewing the material. Online students also get access to ebooks, outlines, terms and definitions, and other resources.

What students like

  • Excellent Reputation: The school enjoys a good reputation among real estate agents who have taken their courses. Students particularly comment on their superb location, experienced instructors, proper exam preparation, reasonable prices, and flexible classes.
  • Knowledgeable instructors: Across-the-board, new real estate students value instructors who are knowledgeable and who can tell them about the real world of real estate. AREA places importance on choosing the right instructors by seeking out the best talent in the market.
  • Multiple modes of learning: Students can complete their pre-licensing course online or in person. CE courses have online versions and live versions as well. The school also offers live stream classes for brokers.
  • Exam prep materials: Many schools offer the exam prep course separately. AREA courses come inclusive with their exam prep course consisting of over 400 questions with topic-specific quizzes and full practice exams.
  • Extended access: AREA gives you access to the course materials for two years, but note that students only have 90 days to complete their courses before they expire.
  • Review video courses:  They will help students review material that they may not have understood during class.
  • Extensive Experience: The experience that the school has garnered throughout the years has helped refine their programs so they can offer students what they need to pass the exam. They also strive to adhere to very high standards.

American Real Estate Academy FAQs

With only 40 hours of instruction required, you can even complete the course in as little as one week if you choose the online self-paced version. In-person classes run for two weeks.

In Massachusetts, the individual pass rates for the schools are not published, making it hard to ascertain the real pass rate of AREA. The only way to know this is if the school provided its pass rates by conducting student surveys.

Let’s address some of the features that the school lacks. For instance, they don’t offer a pass or fail guarantee refund, but this is understandable since they don’t have a separate real estate exam prep. Their website lacks additional resources for students. Some schools offer free live webinars, blogs, articles, ebooks, etc. Also, students may qualify for refunds, but they are not available once they start the course.
